III Hong Kong rom-com can have perverts, deviants, rapists and murderers, and still play it off as a lighthearted story is pretty dumb, it's basically the American Pretty Woman infused with murder, a body double, company intrigue, kidnapping and also there is sex.. and I do mean lots of sex which borders on the soft-core side of things. Especially noteworthy is a montage where a couple uses all of the gym equipment for their sexual sure hope someone stops by in the morning and gives the whole place a good scrub! Pretty Woman — a Hong Kong slice of sleaze cashes in on the Julia Roberts hit with its title and a few plot points — has been my 'holy grail' Category III for some years. On my third visit to Hong Kong, I finally managed to find it. It was my last night in Hong Kong. I came across a grimy little VCD store and there it was, sitting high up above the counter. Upon recognising the cover art, my hands got a little shaky in excitement — quite the overreaction for what would most certainly be a big piece of crap. And yes, Pretty Woman is a big piece of crap, but it's also, in many ways, a perfect… What looks like it's going to be a super-sleazy Cat III erotic comedy crime caper ends up a super-weird, mostly sleazy Cat III erotic rom-com with a bit of violence thrown in. The premise is that, after an office worker rapes and murders his colleague, he hires a lookalike prostitute to take her place... hence the cheeky rip-off title, though I don't recall Richard Gere & Julia Roberts doing any extended, full-frontal sex scenes up against the glass in a squash court, or on various items of gym equipment while working out!!! So that makes this Pretty Woman an immediate improvement over the Hollywood one. The final act focuses on the hooker trying to make things work with the boss of… Cashing in after the Julia Roberts film a year previously, this is a pretty grubby, completely ludicrous Category III romantic comedy !?!?!, opening with the rape and murder of an office worker by her colleague. He then bumps into a prostitute that looks just like her, and instead of this sending him into an existential crisis, or being the set up for a ghost story, he uses the new woman as a way to get away with the murder of the previous as seedy and tonally inconsistent as you'd hope for an early 90s Cat III, which was when the genre really began to push the boundaries of taste as far as it could go. This isn't unusually… The stuff that Cat III dreams are made of!!! Practically every frame oozes sleaze from start to finish, good gooooooooooooooooooodddddddd!!! Inside you are at least four different wolves, I mean films. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Barely any of that made sense but goddamn that bath/shower scene was stupendous. Much more fun than the Julia Roberts movie 😁 Really enjoying my new habit where, if my wife goes to sleep before I do, I'll put on the sleaziest most fucked up shit I can find because she wouldn't want to watch it and won't feel like she's missing out, then I inevitably start to fall asleep an hour in, then I finish it out in the morning, and then she walks into the room while some kind of comedic sexual assault is playing out onscreen and starts yelling at me. never seen the American version of Pretty Woman but I'm fairly sure it doesn't have a scene where Richard Gere has a martial arts fight scene against a deranged rapist-murderer. Another point for Hong Kong. 100% Veronica Yip-core. I got hooked on her ever since I saw 3 Days of a Blind Girl, but sadly, this movie, even though it has her disrobing on multiple occasions !!!, isn't even half as good as the aforementioned masterpiece. The jokes are terrible and the movie is bad except for the erotic scenes that make up for a lot of its faults. The workout sex scene was hilarious and the bathroom mirror, then shower + bathtub scene were the best thing in the movie. It made me raise the rating at least by a star. The kung-fu parts were cringe-worthy, though. Haha. All in all, worth it for Veronica. But only for enthusiasts and completists.
